Period 3,7,8 in room 2340:
We finished the homework sheet for the Energy Unit: We used the Pd. 2 hm.wk. below
Period 2 home done on smart board
If you missed today: 2012-2013
1. You will have to use the following smart board data from your class to complete the ballistic pendulum lab. The purpose of the lab was to use our knowledge of the conservation of momentum and conservation of energy to calculate the velocity of a dart shot from the same dart gun that we used in the dart gun lab. (Remember at that time you shot the dart straight up at the bottom of the steps and your partner watched what height the dart went.) For a real gun, one cannot see what height the bullet goes so they use this ballistic pendulum way to determine the velocity of the bullet. Note the following video of a ballistic pendulum demonstration to music to get the idea and then our class video of period 7 doing the shot into our block of wood. Note in our shot how the swinging block of wood moves a free to slide metal strip horizontally along a meter stick so we can measure x.

Ballistic Pendulum Smart Board Data From
Period 1 Period 4 Period 5 Period 7 Period 8 for you to complete the lab yourself and turn in. Calculate h first and use h to calculate v after the inelastic collision and then use that v to calculate the velocity of the dart just before the collision.
We also took some short videos of volunteer students standing on three light bulbs showing that both three points determine a plane (thus it is the fewest amount of bulbs a person could attempt standing on) and that each bulb would hold a third of there weight (pressure, like the walking on a bed full of broken glass or laying on the bed of nails).

The BIG PICTURE is that:
1. Engineers often use both the conservation of momentum and the conservation of energy to solve for unknowns.
2. Wow, that quadratic formula is actually used in real life situations to calculate important information you need.
3. If you have enough light bulbs sharing the weight of an object it is possible to set the object (you) on the light bulbs. (exception: Mica M., just kidding Mica)
