Anniversary of reaching the top of Mt. Aconcagua & Mr. Flasch tells Vectortine Story:
If you missed today:
1. Anyone in Mr. Konichek and/or Mr. Flasch's Physics classes can check out the video T.O.S.A. (top of South America) and watch it at home for 10 points extra credit. A short paragraph on what you learned because of watching the video needs to be placed in your periods IN basket in back of the classroom.
The main points Mr. Konichek made about climbing Mt. Aconcagua: a). Mr. K. turned down going on previous dangerous expeditions to far Northern Greenland because his children were to young but this time Mr. K. felt his youngest was now old enough for Mr. K. to go on the expedition.
b). Mr. K. two biggest pre-decision things to check out now was approval from his wife and the school board to be gone for three weeks in February. Mrs. K. said it was OK with her if he was prepared physically by professionals so she signed him up at McDonna Sports Therapy and they had Mr. K. workout by improving his balance during workouts. The school board said no at first but when the principal said that he was willing to make up the time in the summer teaching summer school, the school board approved him going.
c). Three different times Mr. K. slept outside during -40 degrees below weather in a canvas tent before finding a sleeping bag that he slept well in. And Mr. K. slid down a glacier in Colorado at winter break, practicing stopping himself with an ice ax until his chest was all black and blue from keeping his ski boots up to prevent breaking his ankles and knees while sliding.
d). Mr. K. showed clips from a dvd where a professional vertical mountain slope climber who even climbed grade 7 frozen waterfalls found the lack of oxygen and low air pressure on Aconcagua harder. Most of the climbers in the video had to turn around due to health problems associated with the high altitude. 16 climbers died in 1997/98 climbing season (the year this video was made).
e). Mr. K. showed of clip of T.O.S.A. (his video) with Vernon Tajos pointing out two critical climbing points:
1). Locking knee back so weight of backpack over the skeleton structure (like a woman holding a child on her hip) thus relieving the leg muscles for a split second each step.
2). Power pressure breath by breathing in through the nose (big breath) and blowing their air out the mouth through a small hole in the lips so to cause a back pressure that delivers more oxygen to the blood stream.
