Vocabulary (Allison, Happy 10th Birthday; this solution is for you)
- Goal of Rubik's Cube
The Goal of Rubik's Cube is after messing the cube up by turning the cube parts randomly all over the place, return the cube to its solution which is to have each of the six sides of the cube, each the same color. Note above photo has the Rubik's Cube solved.
Note from the photo below that when one takes the cube apart the center of each face remains; meaning the goal is to match the center color on each face as the centers are permanent to their face.
Note also from the photo below that the CORNERS have 3 COLORS and there are four corners on the top face and four corners on the bottom face making EIGHT CORNERS total to solve.
Finally, note from the photo below that EDGES have 2 COLORS and there are four edges on top, four edges in the center and four edges on the bottom making 12 EDGES total. So as I reassembled the cube, I was careful to place each corner and each edge in its proper place as if I had put the cube back together incorrectly the cube would not have been solvable (really). Just picture me place the green, red & yellow corner in its correct place so each color matched the colors on the permanent, center of each face located, one-color pieces.

For the numeric solution assign each of the six faces the following numbers.
1 FRONT FACE
2 BACK FACE (NEVER USED IN THIS SOLUTION)
3 RIGHT FACE
4 LEFT FACE
5 TOP FACE
6 BOTTOM FACE
THUS, SINCE THE BACK FACE IS NOT USED, YOU ONLY HAVE TO REMEMBER A HANDFUL OF #'S
5 TOP
4 LEFT 1 FRONT 3 RIGHT
6 BOTTOM
OF COURSE, YOU COULD ALSO NAME THE FACES ANYTHING YOU WISH LIKE
1 FREDA 1' FRANK 3 ROSE 3' RANDY 4 LACY 4' LUKE 5 TRUDY 5' TRACY 6 BETTY 6' BRUCE
WHATEVER WORKS FOR YOU.

NOW WE'LL MAKE FORMULAS WHERE: (Photos below for a visual...)
1 or F means to turn the Front face clockwise 90 degrees
1' or F' means to turn the Front face counter-clockwise 90 degrees
3 or R means to turn the Right face clockwise 90 degrees
3' or R' means to turn the Right face counter-clockwise 90 degrees
4 or L means to turn the Left face clockwise 90 degrees
4' or L' means to turn the Left face counter-clockwise 90 degrees
5 or T means to turn the Top face clockwise 90 degrees
5' or T' means to turn the Top face counter-clockwise 90 degrees
6 or B means to turn the Bottom face clockwise 90 degrees
6' or B' means to turn the Bottom face counter-clockwise 90 degrees
So, the formula BFB'F' means to turn the Bottom face clockwise, then the Front face clockwise, followed by the Bottom face back counter-clockwise and finally the Front face back counter-clockwise 90 degrees.
You'll catch on Allison.

1 or F turn Front face 90 degrees clockwise 1' or F' turn Front face 90 deg counterclockwise
3 or R turn Right face 90 deg clockwise 3' or R' turn Right face 90 deg counterclockwise
4 or L turn the Left face 90 deg clockwise 4' or L' turn Left face 90 deg counterclockwise
5 or T turn the Top face 90 deg clockwise 5' or T' turn Top face 90 deg counterclockwise
6 or B turn Bottom 90 deg clockwise 6' or B' turn bottom 90 deg counterclockwise
Diagram of how I also numbered the top face which comes in handy later.
Quick Photos of Goals of the Steps 1-7
Step 1 The Cross (W Edges 2, 4, 6, 8 done) Step 2 Top Layer Done (W Corners 1, 3, 7, 9 done) Step 3 Middle Layer
Step 4 Yellow Cross(Y Edges 2, 4, 6, 8 UP) Step 5 Cross Done(Y Edges correct place) Step 6 Y Edges Correct Place
AND finally Step 7 Turns the Yellow Edges Facing Up (Y 1, 3, 7, 9) so the Cube is Solved [You Did It!]
Step 7 is a step that you need a lot of faith in as you keep the same colored center face always facing up during th entire step as you position the next Yellow corner that needs to be facing up at position 9 by just turning the top face and as you do Step 7 the entire cube looks like it is all messed up, making you think that you have to return to step 1, however, if you continue in faith doing the steps mentioned the cube magically gets solved before your eyes.
