If you missed today:
1. We challenged each student with a puzzle called TUT's TOMB consisting of two sets of six spheres attached like the number six on a pair of dice or the picture of six on a card and two sets of four spheres the same size linearly hooked together. The problem is to make a perfect pyramid out of these four sets of objects. Note video below to understand the answer and students attempting to solve the puzzle. How could you make a puzzle similar to these with common objects in your home? (spherical cereal or marsh mellows and tooth picks)
2. We had students look at the Physics February Calendar noting both that the other classroom is doing electrostatics now so if you plan on being gone next week you can ask him if you could join his class or if you miss today or another day this week in my class, he'll being doing what we are doing now at the end of the unit in March.
Also we mentioned that midterms are this Friday so if you have anything missing or wish to get the extra credit in this week to bring up your grade by Friday. Students with D's or F's get failing progress reports.
We also noted that we have only three days to cover magnetism before the lab Friday and starting electrostatics Monday.

4. I had students write down nine questions to reflect on off the smart board (The Nine Ponder Questions)
5. Next we showed the beginning of the movie "The Core" where the magnetic field of the Earth starts shutting down so anyone with a pace-maker instantly dies and then pigeons loose their navigational skills and fly into objects.
6. Students were given time to do some exploratory work with the tube of oil with iron filings in it and bar magnets at each table and we went around the room showing how you need to be careful with the magnetic apparatus as they are brittle and break easily.
7. We went out in the hallway and sat on the carpeting and played with the Buzzing Stunt Magnets so if one fell it would land in our lap or on the carpeting as they are brittle and break easy. We onto the library from the hallway and noted that the buzz magnets buzzed as we entered the library through the detector.
