Unit 8: Electrostatics, Magnetism, and Superconductors
Day One: MagnetismToday was the start of a new unit Electrostatics and Magnetism. The unit objective sheet, Magnetism study sheet, and an information sheet were all handed out. The main focus of today was getting the idea of magnetic fields across and how we draw these invisible fields. Most classes did not get to the Earth as a magnet or monopoles but all classes got started with drawing magnetic field lines.
Day Two: MagnetismToday's focus dealt with learning what magnets are and what causes them to behave the way they do. This was more of an information day with demos. Along the lines we talked about a lot of definitions that deals with magnets and their material. A quiz is likely tomorrow on the material that we learn this week.
Day Three: ElectromagnetismToday we explored electromagnetism. We had many demos involving the concept of electromagnetism and how it is used or demonstrated.
A quiz was done today but was not graded or turned in. The goal of this quiz was to highlight the important information from yesterday and the day before.
Day Four: It Can't Work LabToday we will perform a lab that another physics class will be doing in the future. If you miss the lab today you will have a chance to make it up with the other physics class. It is a real tough lab to get full credit for.
Day Five: Electrostatics and VDGToday we started the Electrostatics section of this unit. We watched Sparks and Shocks which provided a lot of information on Electrostatics and the history of Electrostatics. We also gave students a chance to use the VDG and possibly get shocked. I then covered some of the key points of the movie in preparation for tomorrow.
Day Six: Shocking DemosThe day started off with a quiz. Those who are absent/didn't take quiz/want to improve score need to write a make up research paragraph. The paragraph is going to be on Millikan and his famous oil drop experiment. It is worth 8 points but a total of 10 points can be acheived. This should be no longer than 2 paragraphs (10 sentences) and not plagarized. Source needed (not official work cited).
Otherwise we covered polarization and how to charge an object. This included many exciting demos. This is also where we talked about using the electroscope to measure charge
Day Seven: Static UsesStill had school today! We were able to cover what a conductor and insulator were and showed some uses of static electricity. We showed some pratical uses of static electricity and talked about the Electrostatics Study Sheet.
Day Eight: Getting a Charge LabToday was our lab day. We covered the last quiz and talked about how students could make the quiz up. We also discussed how to do the lab which was getting a charge.
Day Nine: Wimshurst and CoulombWe covered Wimshurst and Coulomb today. Their contributions and their devices. Also we talked about path of least resistance. We started to do the only type of math problem needed for this unit. We can think of electric field lines in a way similar to magnetic field lines. Gave an opportunity for extra credit using phet.
Day 10: ElectrophorusToday we introduce a new device called Electrophorus and how it was improved and popularized by Volta. We also ended up making sure everyone was on the same page as far as Coulomb's Law and Electric fields go. We also covered semiconductors and where charge allocates using our knowledge about electrons and conductors.
Day 11: Leyden JarToday was a change of plans day. Originally we were going to cover lightning but due to weather the next few days we discussed Leyden Jars and Capacitors today. We had multiple successful demos of good capacitors. At the end of class we started to go over the Electrostatics worksheet again and what is on tomorrow's quiz.
Day 12: LightningToday we talked about lightning and the characteristics of lightning. We discussed how a good lightning rod is shaped and how lightning is formed. We also covered quite a bit of the blue electrostatics worksheet.
Day 13: CapacitorsToday we took a quiz and reviewed for the test via lights off learning. We also had a capacitor demo and also a few videos on lightning.
Day 14: SuperconductivityToday we were able to cover superconductivity with noting that Meissner Effect, critical temperature, and zero resistance are the main concepts of this topic. Then we reviewed for test.
Day 15: ReviewJeopardy Review day!!! Review for the test and play Jeopardy. Test is tomorrow. We also handed out permission slips for PGA. Website for Jeopardy Review is --http://jeopardylabs.com/play/electrostatics-and-magnetism
Day 16: TestTest day!! Normal rules. 40 multiple choice questions with 36 worth 2 points a piece and the last four being worth 1 point of extra credit each. There will be 3 work out problems that are 4 points each with the last one being extra credit. Good luck and get ready for Pi Day!!
Day 17: Einstein/Pi DayWe reviewed the test and discussed Einstein's contribution. We handed out Einstein research worksheet that was due before spring break
Day 18/19: RelativityRelativity and how it works was explained today. We also learned a little more about Einstein.
The last day with me teaching your classes. Also the last day before spring break. We will be doing a GNATS which is an opportunity for extra credit and also talking about the theory behind black holes. |
