Day 1  Reflection

Day 2  Lab: Draw your face

If you missed today just join Mr. Jenkins classes 1,2,3,5,7,8 or Mrs. Pliska classes 2, or 7 on Tuesday of next week as they will be doing the same lab.

Day 3  Parallax
3D

Today we demonstrated the Chinese Bowl in resonance by making water magically jump out of the bowl while rubbing our hands the opposite way across the handles.  Then each student had a styrofoam cup to drag across their table and the water also jumped out due to the natural freq. of the cup being hit and the sides vibrating on all sides.  Next we watched the YouTube Imagining the Tenth Dimension https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkxieS-6WuA and part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySBaYMESb8o&feature=relmfu .  Next we went over yesterdays lab.  Note Powerpoint below and smartboard notes below.  Also we did the parallax tubes hands on.  Hold a empty toilet paper tube up to an open hand and with both eyes open hold tube up to your eye and concentrate on looking through the tube.  Note you are looking through your hand.  Watched parallax video.
If you cannot get a distant object and a nearby object focused at the same time just poke a small hole in a piece of paper and look at the two objects through the hole.  Note they are both focused now as light from both come in parallel through the hole in the paper thus no parallax.  This is how cameras work, they use a small hole to let light in, in order to focus on near and far objects simultaneously.

Day 4  Lab: Reflection 3DDD

Day 5  Magic Cylinder

Day 6  Blue Moon Luminosity

Today we had the following handout on the vocabulary of visible light.  Words like illumination (E in the units luxs) and luminous flux (P in lumens) and intensity (I in candela [cd]) with the formulas E = P/4 pi d^2 and I = P/4 pi   Note the following file for both sides of the sheet.

Day 7  Concave Mirrors

Today we did two cool demonstrations and filled out all six concave mirror diagrams and the one case for convex mirrors.  The mirror diagrams had a duplicate on the back side for homework (due this Friday) and students filled in the other side.  Below is both a copy of a blank one and a copy of one we filled out.

Day 8 Convex Mirrors

Today we did four demonstrations and then did the entire Problem Sheet #1 for this unit.  Below are two of the four classes notes from the smart board.  Collected Prob. Sheet #1 then.

The four demonstrations were:
1).  Had two metal concave mirrors facing each other.  We placed a heating element at the focal pt. of one of them so it sent parallel heat waves to the other which reflected to the focal pt. where we it lit a match we were holding.
2).  Had about a 50 cm X 150 cm rectangular sheet of window glass with identical objects on either side of the glass.  We lit a candle in a beaker in front of the glass and pretended to light the identical candle behind the glass plate.  From the class side it looked like the back candle was lit because a piece of glass is similar to a 2way mirror in that it looked like the candle was lit.  Then we filled the back beaker over the top of the candle.  Wow!!! Appeared like the candle was still lit under water.
#3  Florescent light bulbs advantages (much less expensive due to less wattage and long life) and disadvantage (has Mercury in it).
#4  Large rectangular wax blocks showing illumination to compare doubling the light sources to halving the distance.

Day 9 Lab: Ripple Tank
Physics Beach Party

Today we did the first eight problems on problem sheet #2.  Below is one of the periods notes off the smart board.

Day 10  Lab Continued

Today I had each class choose one more problem from 9-13 for help with.  The rest are due by Monday when I'll help with two more but the last three each individual needs to do themselves.  Due Wed. the day of the test.
Review the first five sketches quick and the sketches 6 & 7 and the introduction.  Each sketch is five pts. and the questions are another five pts. for a total of 40 pts.  Due Tuesday of next week.
Below are the general ideas behind sketches 6 & 7.

Day 11  Illusions

Three parts today.  Part 1 a GNATS 9 to derive the optics equations due this Friday.  Explain the notes taken today to five people having them sign your notes for 2 pts. each (thus 10 pts. extra credit).  Two periods worth of smartboard notes below.

Secondly we did several illusions and hands on activities.  The magic banana's where two curved banana's the same size are held so one is above the other and the illusion is that the higher one will always look smaller.  We pretended to lengthen the shorter one and swapped them saying "opps" over lengthened it.  Then we handed out mirror illusion objects (star wars Yota and Dark Vatter and coin banks).  Then we made kalidascopes out of 3 microscope slides and a 35 mm film canister.  Lastly students had the rest of the class to finish the ripple tank 40 point lab due tomorrow.

Day 12 Review Day

Today we watched a short piece of Red October where they turn the periscope by turning their whole bodies then each student had a pvc periscope (made by Jim Weidner & Tim Wright) to turn the periscope instead of their body to see why one has to turn with the periscope.  Then we divided the class into groups of two to play jeopardy.  The game can be found at the following site and its name is jeopardy1335825013review when asked to play the game.
They will ask you to save the game as an executable file and then click on what you named it and answer yes that it is save to play.  Make sure you write down the name
jeopardy1335825013review so when you are asked the name you can supply its correct name.  Enjoy!
